Anywhere but Wetherspoons: four cheap places for student nights out in Glasgow

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

Glasgow is a city best known for its fantastic night life and selection of places to eat and drink. Here's a list of the best places you can visit for a great night out on the town.

Bar Soba

Bar Soba is a South-East Asia inspired cocktail bar and restaurant with locations all around the UK, three of which are based in Glasgow. Two of their locations are found in the city centre, one in the Merchant City and the other on Mitchell Lane (just off Buchanan Street). Their third location is based in the West End of Glasgow on Byres Road, which is only a 10-minute Subway trip or a 30 to 40 minute walk from the city centre.

They have a wide range of beers, wines and cocktails on their menu, alongside a delicious selection of street food. Plus, if you sign up for their Soba Students club, you can enjoy a further 40% off food and 20% off drinks to reduce your bill even more! (Just remember to bring your valid student ID to claim your free Soba Students membership card).

In their bars, they play music from local and international DJs, providing you with a great vibe for your night out in the town.

Revolution

If you’ve ever been to a Revolution, whether it be in Glasgow or not, you’ll know just how delicious their drinks are. You can find a great selection of cocktails, beers, wines and shots on their menu, also with a delicious range of food.

Their two Glasgow based locations can be found on Renfield Street and Mitchell Street. Revs can often be quite busy, so to avoid disappointment I’d recommend you book ahead.

Revs is very similar to Bar Soba, in the sense that they also offer a student discount where you can get extra money off your bill. Some of their student offers include:

· 25% off food all day every day

· £4.50 cocktails from Tuesday to Friday

· £3 pint of Amstel from Tuesday to Friday

· £2.50 bottle of Corona from Tuesday to Friday

Not only this, but Revolution are now offering climate friendly cocktails using local spirits and fruit, meaning you can enjoy your drink whilst saving the planet at the same time!

Make sure to download the Revs app and sign up with your valid student email address to claim your offers and discounts.

The Howgait

Situated right on the edge of the Strathclyde University district, The Howgait is a popular location for students. Serving a range of classic pub food, pints and cocktails, it’s a great place for students looking to find somewhere to eat and drink, without breaking the bank.

Whether you’re a student or not, you can enjoy 50% off cocktails every day, and a pint of Tennent’s will only set you back by £3.40. They also serve pub classics such as fish & chips, scampi & chips, and steak pie (costing less than a tenner each). Make sure to download the My Pub app so you can order your food and drink without leaving your table!

Glasgow Hootenanny

Just under St Enoch’s Shopping Centre on Howard Street, Glasgow Hootenanny is a modern bar and restaurant with a buzzing and exciting atmosphere.

Serving great food and drink, they are open from 11am until midnight every day of the week and a pint of Tennent’s will only cost you £3.50. (Note that food is only served until 6pm.)

On weekends they have live entertainment from 8pm until late, and if you’re wanting to watch the football, they have HD televisions dotted around the restaurant.
